Reimbursement of Election Expenses

Candidates and political parties may be reimbursed for up to 50% of their eligible election expenses.

The Elections Finances Act says political participants qualify for reimbursement if:

  • the candidate receives 10% of valid votes in the electoral division
  • the party receives 10% of valid votes in each of the electoral divisions where it endorsed a candidate

The EFA also allows for reimbursement of up to 100% of reasonable child care and disability expenses. The Act defines reasonable expenses as those that are over and above the expenses normally incurred by the candidate. To qualify for the childcare reimbursement:

  • the candidate must receive 10% of valid votes in the electoral division
  • the party must receive 10% of valid votes in each of the electoral divisions where it endorsed a candidate

To review the candidate and party reimbursements for 1995 to the current year, please go to Election Financial Returns.

Allowable Election Expenses

Election expenses refers to money spent or liabilities incurred, and the value of goods or services provided free of normal fees and charges (referred to in The Elections Finances Act as "donations in kind") that are accepted before or during an election to be used during an election period.

As defined in The Elections Finances Act, these include such expenses as:

  • rented office or meeting space
  • advertising

Visit the Spending Limits section to learn more about election and non-election expenses. Further information is available in The Elections Finances Act or contact Elections Manitoba.
